Dear LGW
Members & Community Leaders:
It was a
record attendance for the 2009 Annual Meeting, held on June 22 aboard the
Odyssey. This high energy, standing-room
only event capped a year of many challenges, given the economy, but also many
"home runs" with successful program years for the Adult and Youth Classes of
2009, the Awards Dinner and the best-attended Fall Membership Luncheon. The
event provided great, forward momentum for the new fiscal year as we take LGW
to the next level and ensure we are fostering positive, lasting change across
our the region. Like this year, we will
continue to look for meaningful and fun ways for members to engage, as well as sponsor
regional dialogues and educational sessions. (Please click here to see pictures from Monday's meeting and reception.) The event
also gave us the chance to publicly thank 2008-2009 Board Chair Tom D'Amato
('96) for his exceptional and enthusiastic leadership. I enjoyed acknowledging him for being a great
coach by presenting him with a ball cap that read "LGW Coach" as well as a
whistle, sweat towel, wrist bands and a pom-pom. The 2009-2010 Board Chair Maxine B. Baker
toasted Tom with a festive new LGW signature martini (that we invite you to help
us name), presented him with a special certificate marking his year as Chair
and thanked him for leading from the heart. LGW's very active Board of Directors was also
acknowledged for their hard work and for going above and beyond the call of
duty to further LGW's mission. Be sure
to check out tomorrow's Washington Business Journal for our 2009 Annual Report
insert that shares details of this truly remarkable year.

Tom D'Amato ('96), left, and Maxine B. Baker ('99), right, toast to the completion of a successful year with Leadership Greater Washington.
This year's
top contributor is Geppetto Catering, whose proprietor is Josh Carin ('06). They contributed nearly
$80,000 of in-kind services this year by providing food for both the adult and
youth classes, board meetings and other events.
Also, the 2009 "Best Class" is the Class of 2005, nicknamed "Making the
Region Thrive." Their combined efforts
have helped LGW to thrive this year by sponsoring events, hosting program days, being
Chair's Circle members, completing the annual financial audit and keeping
connected through monthly reunion luncheons.
The inaugural "Agent of Change" Award was presented to Dave Robertson
('02) for his extraordinary behind-the-scenes efforts to ensure top elected
officials addressed the Class of '09, hosting strategy meetings with the area's
community leadership groups and taking a lead role in the "Nonprofit 911"
dialogue.

Josh Carin ('06), second from left, is honored by (left to right) Tom D'Amato ('96), Howard W. Stone, Jr. ('96) & Shirley Edwards ('98) for Geppetto Catering's continuous support.
As we look
to the new program year and beyond, I see an organization that continues to
lead important regional conversations, that gives leaders new tools to develop
and expand their personal leadership skills, that fosters new collaborations
among powerful organizations and that provides engaging, fun and meaningful
opportunities for members and other leaders to connect through the unique
platform we create. This challenging
year has made us a better, stronger organization and helped to underscore the
important role we play in our community.
It also provides me with much hope for the future. I look forward to having you be a part of
this organization and to working with you to make our region the best place to
work, live, learn and play.
Sincerely, Timothy Q. Kime ('98)
