Haiti Relief: The Long Road Ahead
Just eight days after a 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti, LGW and the Greater Washington Board of Trade cosponsored a briefing on the situation in Haiti and role that area organizations are playing in relief efforts. His Excellency Raymond Joseph, Haitian Ambassador to the United States, expressed his nation's gratitude for the United States' quick response, and urged participants not to "lose interest in the crisis," because Haiti is in dire need of long-term aid. Linda Mathes ('97), CEO of the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area, and Steve Morris ('08), National Capital Area Commander of The Salvation Army, agreed with the ambassador. While both told how their organizations were already working "around the clock" to offer critical services, from life-saving blood to counseling for those that lost loved ones, they made it clear that there is a long road ahead. "What took minutes to destroy will take years to rebuild," said Mathes. Speakers urged organizations to look for ways to help on a long-term basis - from blood drives and monetary donations to providing immigration legal guidance and Creole translation services. For more information, including an inventory of needs and details on how communities throughout the Greater Washington region are responding to the crisis, visit http://new.bot.org/Haiti.htm.

The Dialogue Continues on
Foreclosure Crisis in Region
If you missed the latest forum on finding solutions to the foreclosure crisis in Greater Washington - or wish to revisit or share presentations with others - audio of speakers and panelists can now be heard on the Urban Institute's website.
Convened by LGW in partnership with the Urban Institute, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, this was the second regional dialogue on home foreclosures. Speakers explored recent changes in the foreclosure and delinquency rates in the region - including a shift in foreclosures from neighborhoods with high rates of subprime loans to those where home prices have declined. In addition, a panel of business and neighborhood coalitions presented innovations and best practices in working with mortgage servicers to prevent foreclosure and help families stay in their homes.
A third forum may be scheduled for the spring. "This issue clearly is not going away," notes LGW President & CEO Tim Kime ('98), "but we feel that together, we can push forward and find solutions."

Effective Leadership Institute Underway
LGW's new Effective Leadership Institute is now well underway. One day a month, from January to June, 22 mid-level managers to seasoned executives are enhancing their leadership skills through intensive, hands-on training. Conducted by Howard Ross ('91), Founder & Chief Learning Officer of Cook Ross and former LGW chairman, ELI has multiple streams. "The first," says Ross, "involves developing a greater sense of self-awareness about how we function as leaders. Through ELI, participants then develop the skills and competencies that are essential for effective management and accountability. Participants then delve further to build organizational understanding, such as how to shift the culture of an organization and unify people around a shared vision."

YLGW Engages Area Youth in Shaping the Future
Forty eight high school sophomores and juniors are discovering that youth is no barrier when it comes to making a difference. Co-chaired by Mary Abbajay ('06), President & CEO of Careerstone Group, LLC, and Ramien Pierre ('05), Youth Leadership Greater Washington's (YLGW) Class of 2010 unites young people from diverse neighborhoods and 37 schools to explore the challenges and opportunities of the region. From January to June, members of YLGW's Class of 2010 are exploring topics ranging from the arts and diversity to public safety and health. "If anyone is doubtful or cynical about the future, watching these young people in action would dispel those notions," says Abbajay. Adds Pierre, "It's remarkable to see them come together, connect, and, in just a few hours, discover that they, as leaders, can help create solutions to the region's challenges."

LGW Member Dinners: Food, Fun and Friends
More than 45 LGW members gathered in the homes of eight LGW members across the region on March 10, enjoying dinner and great conversation. Member Dinners are an informal, fun way to reconnect with friends and meet new class members. Just look at these testimonials from the dinners earlier this month:
Daniel Flores ('10): "If we were to do this again, I don't know how to top it but am sure we could have fun figuring it out."
Camille Mosley ('09): "As always, great connections, interesting conversations and a reaffirmation of why I love LGW!"
Debra Silimeo ('02): "Member dinners are truly one of LGW's best ideas!"
The next Member Dinners will take place on Thursday, June 3. If you would like to host a dinner in your home, please contact Jackie Dilworth at jdilworth@lgwdc.org or 202.777.4491. |
