2009 Freddie Mac Foundation Youth Volunteer Award
The 2009 Freddie Mac Foundation Youth Leadership Award was proudly presented to Andre Johnson, an 11th grade student and member of the football team at McKinley Technical High School in Washington, DC. As a student and now a mentor, Andre uses his own experience to help boys from rough neighborhoods to turn their "life pieces" into "masterpieces." Andre credits Life Pieces, and its founder Mary Brown as his true inspiration. Andre is a true role model for young leadership, sharing his commitment with many other worthy organizations. He has volunteered for the past three years for the DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, as well as the DC Alliance for Youth Advocates and the Anacostia Watershed Society. He is now a valued member of Youth Leadership Greater Washington's class of 2009.
2009 Cafritz Foundation Youth Partnership Award
The winners of this honor were Mentors, Inc. and PEPCO. Founded in 1987, Mentors, Inc. works to increase the graduation rates and success of Washington, D.C.'s public high school students by pairing them with caring adult volunteers in structured and enriched mentoring relationships. They provide ongoing individualized support and enrichment opportunities in the areas of college preparation, career exploration, community service and life skills development. It is the only city-wide one-on-one high school mentoring program in this area.
PEPCO, a subsidiary of PEPCO Holdings, Inc., provides safe and reliable electric service to more than 750,000 residential and commercial customers in Washington, DC, and Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland.
Mentors, Inc. and PEPCO have joined together to increase opportunities for Washington, D.C. youth, many of whom are underserved and low-income. Through Mentors, Inc.'s expertise and guidance, powerful friendships are formed that expose students to new possibilities, build confidence and support them in making positive decisions about their lives.
Since 1987, Mentors, Inc. has matched more than 4,000 students with mentors. Eighty-nine percent of their seniors graduated last June and 70 percent went on to post-secondary education with the support of $63,000 in Mentors, Inc. scholarships. In September 2008, Mentors, Inc. launched its first middle school mentoring program at Sousa Middle School.
2009 Fannie Mae Volunteer of the Year Award
The recipient of this award was Barbara Donnellan, a member of the Class of 1999, who was honored at LGW's 23rd Anniversary Community Service Awards Dinner & Silent Auction. This award is presented to an LGW member who has used leadership skills to provide outstanding service in the Greater Washington region.
2008 Freddie Mac Youth Award
This honor was presented to Derron Scott of Largo High School in Largo, MD. This award recognizes outstanding leadership by an individual under the age of 21 whose service positively impacts the lives of young people and/or the quality of life in the community.
2008 Fannie Mae Volunteer of the Year Award
The recipient of this award was Viki Betancourt, a member of the Class of 2004, who was honored at LGW's 22nd Anniversary Community Service Awards Dinner & Silent Auction. This award is presented to an LGW member who has used leadership skills to provide outstanding service in the Greater Washington region.
2008 Comcast Community Partnership Award
This year's Community Partnership Award goes to the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) and Allied Capital Corporation. This honor is presented to the partnership of a non-profit organization and a business (for profit) entity for their successful collaboration efforts on a community project of significant impact.
2008 Cafritz Foundation Founders' Award for Leadership & Community Service
LGW congratulates Barbara Krumsiek, a member of the Class of 1998 and President & CEO of Calvert Group, on receiving this honor. This award recognizes an individual, a business or a non-profit entity whose cumulative commitment, values and dedication exemplifies the vision of Leadership Greater Washington's founders to encourage community service, to value diversity, to promote regionalism and to enhance civic leadership.
2008 Walter Washington District Champion Award, Presented by Carmen Group
This first-time honor, presented by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, was awarded to Anthony E. Costa, Deputy Commissioner of the US General Services Administration's Public Building Services. This award recognizes the outstanding leadership by a federal official whose performance most meaningfully served the people of the District of Columbia and its surrounding areas - which have challenges resulting from its unique federal interface.
2007 Freddie Mac Youth Leadership Award
This honor was presented to Sandra Quel, an 18-year-old student at DC's Youthbuild Public Charter School. She was honored for her efforts to give immigrants a voice and to educate her peers about HIV/AIDS. Cheryl Clarke, the Director of Foundation Giving at the Freddie Mac Foundation, presented the honor. Introduced in 2002, this award has honored Wilson High School student & DC Youth Mayor Crystal Williams, Archbishop Carroll High School student Bryce Jones, Ballou High School's Community Equity Empowerment Program, and 14-year-old Rosham Baddeilyanage who raised funds for victims of the 2005 Asian tsunami disaster.
2007 PNC Bank Leadership & Community Service Award
This honor was presented to Maxine Baker, a member of LGW's Class of 1998 and a philanthropic community leader. Maxine's work with Wednesday's Child and other efforts have had a strong impact on youth, both locally and nationally. M. Craig Pascal, Vice President/ Territory Manager for PNC Bank, gave the honor.

2007 Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Community Partnership Award
This honor was presented to the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation with the Center for Nonprofit Advancement and the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington for collaborative efforts to support area nonprofit executive directors in their efforts to positively impact the community. Calvin Cafritz, Chairman, President & CEO of the Cafritz Foundation, presented the award.

2007 Fannie Mae Foundation Volunteer of the Year Award
Community leader Michael C. Rogers, a member of LGW's Class of 2000, received this honor, which was announced for the first time during the March 29th event. This honor was presented to him for his excellent volunteer service including being a member of the Board of Directors for the Council on Court Excellence, Board Chair for the Washington Region for Justice & Inclusion, and Board Chair for Leadership Greater Washington. This honor was presented by Stacey Stewart, Senior Vice President for Fannie Mae.
